The feeling at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Coming Unstitched?
Was Lazio's season falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were facing for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or imploding.
Matteo's Unforeseen Comeback
One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this season. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, Lazio were pushing for him to stay there temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.
He joined initially during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Discovering His Best Role
It's possible the coach was still trying to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
